2013 Annual Appeal Nears Half Way Mark! There's still time to make your 2013 contribution to SDA's 2013 annual appeal. We've received over $5,000 in donations so far; now we hope you'll help double that amount before the year ends to fund grants and awards for 2014. To help you understand how important SDA's grants and awards are, here are comments from three K-12 teachers who received full scholarships to attend the 2011 SDA conference in Minneapolis. Two, Christine and Jeanette, met for the first time there and found out they share a similar vision; they are now partnering to make it a reality. Christine Miller Fibers have been a passion my entire life. I'm a high school art teacher at Williams High School in Plano, Texas, and also working towards a graduate degree in art education at Texas Woman's University. I've discovered there aren't many K-12 fiber art curriculum resources available for teachers so they must go out scouting for them. My graduate project will be to develop a K-12 fiber arts curriculum website that will be a resource for teachers everywhere; it will be the legacy project of my life. Jeanette Thompson As a teacher, I'm always trying to figure out ways to do things with a very small budget. The desire to bring fiber materials into the classroom led me to teach art quilting at the after school center. In my classroom I introduced sewing and we used felts to make images and patterns and designs. This past year we did a project based on artist Susan Shie. We did some weaving and created looms with cardboard. Now I'm working with Christine Miller to develop a K-12 fiber art curriculum that will include video interviews of contemporary fiber arts and related projects and materials to go with that. It will be a whole package, so if a teacher has never done anything with fiber or fabric, there will be materials to make it easier to implement the modules in their classrooms. Lea McComas   I returned from the SDA conference bursting with numerous plans for art activities for myself as well as my students. At the time, I worked in a day treatment facility with troubled teens, and I was able to team up with staff social workers to provide some therapeutic fiber arts activities for that population. Surface Design Association (SDA) is launching an online Swatch Collection catalogue to offer a unique look at the processes and techniques in contemporary textile art and design. The first swatch collection catalogue enables website visitors to scroll through a selection of over 65 samples. The swatches are one of SDA's most popular educational tools. The collections circulate throughout the United States on loan to various groups, who use them to gain a better understanding of what "surface design" means. The online swatches now offer this opportunity to everyone who would like to know more about the processes that artists are exploring in this field.   To continue to build this important teaching tool, SDA is inviting its members to help launch a fourth collection. SDA is seeking contributions of 12" x 12" samples featuring innovative techniques or distinctive examples of any textile or fiber-inspired process by December 1, 2013. KANSAS SDA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Getting Snippy, hand embroidery, cotton thread JOYCE SUELLENTROP Wichita, Kansas What have been the benefits of being a member of SDA? How has the Association helped you as an artist? I am a new member and am still exploring the benefits of being a member. What is your training or educational background? I have no formal art training. Please describe the art you make: I create and design a work; then I draw or sketch it and, finally, transfer it to fabric and embroider it. The work is hand embroidered. A Stitch in Time, hand embroidery, cotton thread What are some reasons that making art is important to you? The act of creation is stimulating and satisfying.   It is an act of contemplation, a journey of imagination, a mastering of new skills and a sense of completion.   Bee, hand embroidery, cotton thread Do you work outside the studio in another occupation or have strong interests in another field, and if so will you describe? I am retired.   I am an historian. I am no longer teaching. I am active, doing a variety of things, such as oral history, archival work, researching and writing. What methods/processes/lifestyle tips do you find helpful to producing work? Two friends, a poet and a quilter, and I collaborated on Fabrication of a Life. We decided on prompts, for example: a stitch in time, filipendulous, getting snippy, spinning out of control. We set deadlines, met regularly, talked about our work, both joys and frustrations. Do what you can when you can. Which artists, other individuals or subjects currently inspire you? We are working on our second collaboration, "A Semblance of Order". We all are inveterate list makers and started with that. We talked about types of lists: book lists, wine lists, word lists, litanies, landscape as a list, lists with a boundary, a "sevens" list and several more. From that discussion, we decided on "A Semblance of Order" as the name of our collaboration and will develop prompts as we begin our work. Past month of May joined Meeting of KS & MO

Last month with Mary Elmusa (Kansas State Rep) we had a meeting at the Kansas City Art Inst in Kansas City, Missouri.  Here are some photos of those who attended this event along with some food and the SDA Swatch book from all over the states.  So many beautiful fabrics and news of what our members are doing.  We had KCAI students show us around the new Fiber Dept building, that seemed just as much fun for them as for us.  It is called the Warehouse!

On Sunday, April 7, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., we are getting together to meet & visit at the Kansas City Art Institute Fiber Department Building, a newly renovated warehouse space located at 4218 Walnut, Kansas City, MO 64111. Come see the new studio space and gallery and co-mingle with your fellow SDA members.  

On the agenda will be a casual information presentation about the upcoming conference in San Antonio, a hands-on viewing of the member swatch collection, and time to meet and share your work with others.  

Please feel free to bring an interested friend who may be thinking of joining SDA. It would be great if everyone could bring a finger-food style appetizer or dessert. Water, plates and napkins will be provided. It will be a great time to connect with other creative people with similar interests; also if you are considering the conference you may find someone to share accommodations, rides, etc.  It should be a fun afternoon, well spent!
