Create intuitive whole cloth art quilts about life
around you, using fabric paints, markers, and
optional airpen. Reconnect to your inborn ability to
create  spontaneously, while drawing, painting, and
possibly writing in your stories of today in a small
starter painting and a second larger piece you’ll quilt
in class. Sketchbook work will lead to the stories
and images for our class projects.  Instead of
judging your work, switch to enjoying the thrill of
taking art risks, which turn into leaps of creative
freedom.  I's fine if you thing you can't draw,
paint, or write.
In this class you'll find it easy to express yourself,
like you did when you were little.
Artists must provide supplies. A supply list will be
provided when the workshop meets the minimum
registration requirement.
About Susan Shie

combination of painting, drawing, and quilting. In her
current work, Shie draws on to blank fabric with an
current events.

WEAVER'S GUILD OF ST. LOUIS PRESENT: SILK FUSION

Weaver’s Guild of St. Louis Presents:

  Silk Fusion
      Instructor:
   Karen Selk

Monday, March 5, 2012     9:00 am – 4:30 pm

TOPIC: Silk Fusion

Format: 1 day workshop

Description:

What ever you call it, it is hot and beautiful.  A spectrum of unspun silk fibres will be arranged and fused with textile adhesive to produce a “felt” of varying thicknesses.  Silk fused fibres can be crinkled while wet and hold its shape.  Other fibres, feathers and ribbons can be incorporated into the silk fusion.  It becomes a perfect canvas for machine or hand stitching, quilting, three dimensional sculptures, jewelry, wearable art, book coverings, collage and on and on.  We will make one or two pieces to be taken home to dry.

Ability Level:

Everyone

Student Supply List:
Will be sent to participants

Maximum class size: 20

BIOGRAPHY
Karen has been a textile designer and artist since 1972.  Her primary focus has been weaving and fusing felt with silk.  A quest for knowledge of all aspects of silk has taken her throughout Asia researching the history and heritage of silk traditions.  She travel teaches sharing her approach through lectures and workshops.  The cloth, culture and people of other countries as well as the life in Karen’s garden are the source of her creative spirit.  Karen is the author of numerous magazine articles, an educational poster about the life cycle of the silkworm and a silk fusion video.  As managing director of Treenway Silks for 30 years she has designed and developed new yarns, fibres, kits and colour palettes.

UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS
Refuse/Reseen Refuse/Reseen
April 14-June 2, 2012
Reading, PA

PROSPECTUS

Refuse/Reseen encourages artists working in fiber to become infatuated with the idea of exploring the possibilities of disposable and disregarded stuff as the basis for this submission. Our challenge for fiber artists everywhere is to take the most ordinary, non-precious and every day materials and to create the most extraordinary. The reuse of every conceivable material is already imbedded in the psyches of many working artists today. This exhibit will require the use of materials which are not durable and are normally considered ephemeral and short lived. Exhibit will be on display at some things looming in Reading, PA.
Submission deadline is February 25, 2012.

Juror Warren Seelig lives and works in Rockland, Maine. He holds the rank of distinguished visiting professor in the Fibers/Mixed Media program at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia where he teaches, curates and writes on various subjects related to textile, fiber and material studies.
